I have been going through the book I Became a Christian and All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt by Vince Antonucci with my young adults' class. We didn't meet this week because of weather but last week we covered a chapter that focused on slowing down. The short version is many of us live life at 100 mph when God is moving at 3 mph. This is a reference to our habit of having our goals and tasks and completing them while missing all the people we could be interacting in as we accomplish our goals. Vince uses some really great examples from his life, but I want to share one of mine. Monday was my … [Read more...]
WordPress a journey
About two months ago I began investigating using Wordpress as a blog platform over blogger. I had installed it on my local machine and experimented with it occasionally in my free time, of which I have little. Two weeks ago I began the process of moving my blog over to Wordpress and one week ago I went live. Peter of Rediscovering the Church helped my quite a bit as I began this journey. I have reached a few conclusions. Blogger is a simpler platform for basic blogging needs. It is easy to setup and takes little knowledge to make a nice, clean blog. Of course it also takes little … [Read more...]
Growing Not Young Together
It seems unfair that I only have one post currently marked as "My Experience As a Husband" considering that this is one of the biggest parts of my life. I love my wife dearly. We have been married for 10 years now and going strong. This Monday my wife will be celebrating her 30th anniversary of birth. Of course this is 29 the sequel as my wife insists she is not turning 30. I guess it is time for an introduction. My bride is Susan. She is not a geek, but she does love Science Fiction and Fantasy. We met when she was 15 and dated for 4 years before getting married. She was born and raised … [Read more...]
Dress like a Youth Pastor Part IV: A New Accessory
If you don't get the title then you aren't a sci-fi geek, don't feel bad you can learn to love and laugh at all things sci-fi if you really work hard. So this is the 4th installment of how to dress like a Youth pastor. I will be talking about accessories, but be warned that I really don't accessorize, so expect just a bit more sarcasm than previous posts. Belts: The first line of accessories are belts. If your pants slip and fall then buy a belt. You may be tempted to go with suspenders but trust me, those won't score nearly as many cool points as you might be thinking. Unless you live in … [Read more...]
The gift that keeps on giving: something dead
So youth was tonight but things were quite a bit different. We have flood and freeze warnings going on depending on your elevation so church was more or less canceled. I figured some people would be there regardless so I went and we had like 30 students show up. I took them up to the sanctuary where about 4 adults showed up. We had service up there and things generally went well. More than well at some points as we had a great altar time with about 10 students and 2 others acknowledging they needed Jesus to forgive them. I would say got saved but I know the one has prayed the "sinner's … [Read more...]
One complaint at a time
I remember the movie "What about Bob?" If you haven't seen that movie or don't remember it then you might want to watch this clip. What About Bob Clip @ Yahoo! Video Bob is completely neurotic but is learning to change with "baby steps." Of course he doesn't get it and this leads to some seriously stupid funny. The thing is, grumbling and complaining doesn't usually start big. I'm betting that they didn't go from "Yeah, God is giving us food from Heaven" to "Manna again!?!?!? I'd rather eat me shoes than eat mana one more time" overnight. No it started small. Someone woke up and said … [Read more...]
Blog Carnival – Grief
Honestly I don't know that I would choose to write on grief. I try to have fun and keep things light unless I need to vent, but I struggle with depression and feelings of self-doubt. That is one of the reasons I avoid writing on subjects like grief. I did write a post about my deepest grief once. It is also my greatest testimony that I call being taken from the black hole. This year had brought quite a bit of grief to myself and dear friends and family. My grandmother died on my mother's birthday this year. I don't know if I would survive that. I was asked to speak at the funeral and … [Read more...]
What could be more wonderful than peanut butter
OK I imagine there are many things better, but it is amazing for so many reasons. As a quick food Peanut butter is a great quick meal. You can eat it with a spoon right out of the jar if you are really pressed for time, but it doesn't take long to have peanut butter and cracker, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, or my favorite peanut butter and honey sandwiches. This brings me to my next point. Tastes great with other foods We all know about the classic PB&J and also the somewhat different peanut butter and banana. There is also the previously mentioned peanut butter and honey. In my … [Read more...]
Crazy scary cover, frigintastic book
Yesterday I mostly wrote about a group that I facilitated in an ethics workshop. I was told by someone that they were frightened at how callous the girls were. I will say that this group was a bit harsh but there were a couple that didn't go with the group decision. They just didn't stand up for their opinion very strongly. More importantly there were some really cool opinions from other groups. One story in particular was a young lady that I noticed right away. She dressed so that people would see here. Not in the slutty way but in the 8 inch tall Mohawk and all the cloths you would … [Read more...]
Ethical Dilemmas of Teen girls
Last week was crazy busy but also lots of fun. I loved almost everything I did including officiating my first wedding. I want to write about the wedding but I'm trying to see if I have some video or at least pictures for post with it. In the mean time let me share about two other things I did. Tuesday I was at a sectional lunch with other ministers. I've really liked what we are doing with the new section. We have been getting together once a month and fellowshipping. Much better than how things were going with the previous section.Of course this probably sounds pretty boring, and to … [Read more...]
