It keeps happening to me. I think about God and how amazing He is. I think about everything He has done and I am literally in awe. He made the entire universe form scratch. I can't even bake a freakin cake without a box recipe. He build each of us and made us unique and special and then made it all better when we screwed up his perfect work of art that is us over and over. Despite all of that I keep forgetting just how big and powerful God is. Maybe it is because He is close and personal. He is a friend and Father. I end up putting human limitations on Him and then wonder why I am … [Read more...]
Blue Law Sunday
I often learn new and fascinating fact in church. Unfortunately they are often random things that aren't really part of what I should have learned. Pastor did a great sermon yesterday from Matthew. It had something to do with being full of the Spirit of God and acting like it. I try really hard to pay attention, but I get easily distracted and there are so many distracting things in the sound booth. Of course I do learn things. Yesterday I learned about the blue laws. I had heard of these kinds of things in the past, and I even know that some of these laws still exist in certain … [Read more...]
Mysticism and Dreams
I try to be a very logical person. I see creation as a structured construct. Things have a cause and effect. God planned everything out carefully and knew what each action would cause. He is not random or capricious. This is the basis for my theology and my world view. On the other hand I believe God is close and involved with us if we listen. I know a lot of people disagree with me. The believe that God is either this distance creator that started things and then stepped back to see what happens or that he does get involved from time to time but only with specific and special people. Many … [Read more...]
Mr. Fix-it
My kids are growing up. They have been breaking things since they were very young. The baby broke our DVD player a couple months ago. My second born took a toy apart earlier this week. Today I saw the youngest girl trying to put a pair of play shoes back together. So far I have been able to fix most of the things they break, but they have started to try and fix it on their own. Most of the time they are trying to hide it from me, but occasionally they are trying to emulate me. One of the other kids will break something so the older two try to fix it for them. As far as I know they haven't … [Read more...]
Buying Sex
They say "sex sells" and it seems that was the theme of the Super Bowl ads last night. There were two different Go Daddy commercials where women were showing off their bodies to sell web services. There was a cell phone commercial featuring Megan Fox taking a bath. There were several other commercials involving people in various stages of undress. Of course none of this is really new. Sex has been part of of the sales for as long as I can remember. It has probably been since the very beginning of sales history. Some half nekkid cave woman drawn on the community wall advertising custom stone … [Read more...]
Not a bad person
Yesterday I wrote about some bullying that happened in Youth this week. I don't know the real answer on how to deal with that but if you have a suggestion then please head over and let me know. I briefly hinted at my past problem with bullies. Back in school I tended to attract them. There were several features that caused me to get more than my share of bullying. I was pretty smart I moved a lot I didn't have a lot of friends (part of moving a lot) I have a very strong aversion to injustice I reacted There were certainly other reasons but these were the main ones. The biggest … [Read more...]
Churches, we don’t need no stinking churches
I recently read some disturbing statistics about churches here in America. We all know that churches are closing their doors all across the country. This is pretty upsetting but not what I would call disturbing. This specific statistic states that only 15% of churches are growing and only 2.2% are from conversion. This means a lot of things when you follow the logic through. Now I'm not the best at math any more, I just don't use it that much, so please forgive me if I mess up on any of these percentages. If 15% of churches are growing this means that 85% are holding steady or losing … [Read more...]
10 easy steps to identify a false prophecy
If you attend a church that is even slightly charismatic you are likely to hear someone say something to the effect of "thus sayeth the Lord." Of course if God is talking then we better listen, but how can we tell if the message is from God? This can be a tricky proposal because if we aren't particularly close to God then we won't have that "I can feel God talking" sensation, and let's face it, if God is telling us something there is a good chance that it involves us being a bit too distant. Now I can't guarantee a message is from God, but I can usually identify the ones that are not from God. … [Read more...]
The lies we tell
A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post called, "No wonder people don't trust Christians" where I related a lie that Christians like to tell. To be honest a great many Christians spread lies and don't even know it. Some of the lies are innocent, like the rope tied to the priest's ankle when he went into the holy of holies on yom kippur. You might believe this is a Biblical truth, but unfortunately it is just a cool idea that isn't found in the Bible or any other ancient Rabbinic texts. The first time it shows up is around the 14th century, long after the Temple was destroyed. Other lies are more … [Read more...]
No wonder people don’t trust Christians
I am helping with Bible and Chemistry for one of the students at the Christian school the church hosts. He is a senior but really struggles with learning. His basic learning abilities are stunted because they would let him look at the answer keys whenever he didn't know the answers. Apparently this is the basic process by which the high school has always handled teaching and it hasn't terribly hurt most of the students because they don't abuse the system. The problem is, students that need extra help are harmed because they learn that abusing the system is easier. Anyways, the point is … [Read more...]
