I love my kids and I love my parents, but somewhere people don't understand a fear I have deep down inside of me. I think it has to do with my mother pulling my teeth when I was young. She tried all the made for sitcom methods of tooth extraction. I really did have my tooth tied to a door knob and other ingenious devices. None of those things worked. The last time I went to her about a loose tooth she came at me with a pair of pliers. Now you have to understand this. When I got my first loose tooth my mother was a dental assistant. You would think that she would have a leg up on other … [Read more...]
The Happiest place on Earth … kinda
I should be putting up one of my fiction posts but I really want to get through the vacation, talk about King's Fest, and get back on my regular schedual. The last time I walked about my vacation I was in Northern CA and my wife was in Southern CA. Of course it wouldn't be a vacation if I didn't get back to my wife so late Tuesday morning my FIL finished the project he had to work on for his non-ministry job and we headed to Southern CA. With stops it was over a 12 hour trip. We left about 11am and arrived to our location at 1am the next day. I drove most of the trip because my FIL has a … [Read more...]
Why vampires don’t sparkle
Like I said the past couple of days there are a lot of really great things about this vacation. I had to pull the bad out so the good would look even better by comparison. Today I'm going to talk about the plane trip, the boardwalk, and the redwoods. The flight out was interesting to say the least. Tuesday I got a call that the flight was canceled but that they had rescheduled us for a later flight that arrived earlier. We flew into LAX instead of DFW. This resulted in a shorter layover but a much longer first flight. The second leg was about an hour. The trip was pretty straight forward … [Read more...]
Vacation Defined
Yeah I had a 2 week trip but definitely not a vacation. I think the problem is a difference in how that word is defined. My MIL, who I talked about extensively yesterday, seems to think that doing things other than work is the same as a vacation. I tend to think of a vacation as something that should be both fun and relaxing. I'm not opposed to doing things, but I like to enjoy what I'm doing, not just mark off a list of things that I have done.Let me give a couple of examples. I wanted to visit the redwood national forest. Turns out there are more than one and more than one kind of giant … [Read more...]
My very unvacation
Have a very merry un-vacation …Ok or something like that. Actually there were a lot of good things about my vacation but it was more than a little stressful. I want to share a lot of the good things including pictures, but I don't want to really mix the good with the bad so I'm gonna pull all that out right here right now.Let me just say that 2 weeks was neither long enough and way too long. It wasn't long enough because there are things I wanted to do that we didn't have time for and it was way too long because of all the stuff we did do. My mother-in-law (MIL) is the root of most of the … [Read more...]
Vacation Update: Living in the 90s
Just a really quick note here. I'm in the middle of nowhere Northern CA. I have no cell phone signal and would have to travel at least half an hour to get one. My only access to the digital world is through a dialup connection. OK sure it may not be third world but compared to my normal near cybernetic existence it is as if I have lsot one of my senses. Not one of the important ones like sight, hearing, or touch. No one of the elsser senses like taste and smell. Sure it is handy to be able to taste and smell but people that ahve lost those can carry on as if they have no handicap … [Read more...]
Living in a world of dragons and finger paint
Life is amazing. It is exciting and wondrous. Think back to when you were a child and saw so many things for the first time. Were you like me trying to figure out how it all worked? How did a car actually move? There had to be a reason behind it all. Were you the child that saw the world through finger paint and crayons? Did you live in a cast world of fantasy with friends of every shape and size? Were there monsters in the closet and knights and princesses that saved the day? What happened to you? Why is life so boring? Who spoke death into you? Who told you that there isn't an … [Read more...]
My experience as dad: my son
The past couple times I talked about my kids it was my oldest daughter. The thing about being oldest is you get to do most things first and so it's easy to overlook when the others do things. My oldest son does get the advantage of being the first to do some boy things, like standing up to pee. OK that's not entirely true. When my daughter was potty training she walked in and saw how daddy did it then tried with her potty. Fortunately I saw and got her seated before she figured out how to straddle the little potty. He was definitely the first to pee in the woods though, and off the deck. … [Read more...]
First broken heart
My daughter has learned something new. We bought her a Baby Alive and she has to go a week without any demerits in school and clean her room everyday to earn the baby. Quite frankly I think the baby is a lot creepy, like Chucky. Watch the video and decide for yourself. All my daughter has been talking about for the last week is this baby doll. She got a demerit on Wednesday (the only one this week) and pitched a huge fit that really surprised her teacher. We were going to let her have it if she didn't get any more demerits (what can I say, I'm an old softy) and cleaned her room. Today she … [Read more...]
Raising a 5 year old teen girl
There are a lot of really cool things about being a Youth pastor. I get to have lots of fun doing something I love. Not a lot of people can say that about their jobs. I get to help shape the lives of young men and women, even fewer people get to say that. I could go on and on but right now I want to talk about one major drawback. My 5 year old daughter loves the Youth and they love her. She likes to head in with my early on Youth night and stay with me late. She rides on the boys skate boards and hangs out with the girls. She is starting to talk about clothes and makeup with these girls. … [Read more...]
