I have to admit that being a parent certainly shapes this idea for me. I love the song Mary did you know because it opens my eyes to the importance of Mary, but watching my son trying to do things and getting frustrated opens my eyes to what it cost Jesus to become a baby.

I agree, the sacrifice started long before the garden. It may be the literary climax within the Gospels, but compared to the Bible as a whole then I would say the climax is when the Angel goes and talks to Mary. Jesus was ready to do what had to be done and so began the sacrifice.

A few weeks ago, when I was mythbusting Christmas, I pointed out the “nice clean” stable is the biggest lie about Christmas. Bigger than Dec. 25th being Jesus’ probably date of birth. I gave my students a bit of hay and asked them to stick their open hands with it. I really think it helped them understand what Jesus really did.
