Most of the time being a dad is really cool. Watching your kids learn is an amazing, possibly even a frigintastical experience. Other times it can be really frustrating or even down right scary. I remember when my oldest son was born. He was 10 weeks early, and quite frankly I didn’t really believe my wife when she told me we had to go to the hospital in the middle of the night. Fortunately she convinced me and we rushed to the other side of town. He was born before the doctor made it to the hospital “in call” (my wife’s water hadn’t even broken).

His little cry was so small and distant that when my wife told me he was here (I had stepped into the hall for less than a minute with my 10 month old daughter to call out friends one more time and missed him being born), that I didn’t believe her for the second time. I knew she was confused because the only baby I could hear had to have been down the hall. Then I saw this tiny baby (3lbs 6oz) through the nurses crowded around the heat lamp. That was the first time I saw him.

Over the next 6 weeks we had to drive to visit him, and it was a real struggle, but he kept fighting, kept getting bigger, kept getting stronger. Little man didn’t let being born too early slow him down all that much.

He is still pushing hard. He struggles with many things, a post for another day, and he is still willful and defiant, mostly in a good way. The other day I learned that I don’t enjoy all the educational experiences my children might have. I told him, and the other 3, not to play on the treadmill at a friend’s house. They had turned it on once already. A while later I heard it spinning up and I ran to them. When I came in I saw a pile of blankets (which I later learned were for “safety”) at the back of the treadmill and my son sitting on them. I barked at all the kids and turned it off again, unplugging the key once more. All of the sudden my 6 year old son started screaming. He had slipped and caught his hand on the treadmill. It removed a good size bit of skin from his hand, we ended up having to take him to the doctor over it. All in all he is fairing well, but…

We both learned something that day. He learned to listen if I say not to play on the treadmill ever again. I learned I don’t want to watch my kids learn the hard way.

My daughter has learned something new. We bought her a Baby Alive and she has to go a week without any demerits in school and clean her room everyday to earn the baby. Quite frankly I think the baby is a lot creepy, like Chucky. Watch the video and decide for yourself.

All my daughter has been talking about for the last week is this baby doll. She got a demerit on Wednesday (the only one this week) and pitched a huge fit that really surprised her teacher. We were going to let her have it if she didn’t get any more demerits (what can I say, I’m an old softy) and cleaned her room. Today she hasn’t cleaned her room. I told her that she had to clean and I wasn’t giving her any more reminders. If she didn’t clean she wouldn’t get her baby. Later she was playing instead of cleaning so I told her she wouldn’t be getting her baby. Well she somehow come up with the phrase, “Daddy broke my heart.”

Yep, I broke my 5 year old’s heart. I am resolved to stand by what I said but it sure breaks my heart. Sometimes parenting is super awesome and other times it is super suck. Right now it sucks.

There are a lot of really cool things about being a Youth pastor. I get to have lots of fun doing something I love. Not a lot of people can say that about their jobs. I get to help shape the lives of young men and women, even fewer people get to say that. I could go on and on but right now I want to talk about one major drawback.

My 5 year old daughter loves the Youth and they love her. She likes to head in with my early on Youth night and stay with me late. She rides on the boys skate boards and hangs out with the girls. She is starting to talk about clothes and makeup with these girls. Trust me, this is a huge problem.

A couple weeks ago she was sitting out with a group of young teen girls while they were talking about relationships and friends and such. One of the girls she was talking about had the same name as her so she thought they were talking about her. Apparently she seems to think one of the girls is like her older sister or something. They commented that the girl’s step sister (who has the same name as my daughter) looks nothing like her. My daughter yells out in a perfect teen girl tude voice, “we have the same hair.” Admittedly the two do have similar hair but that is about as far as the resemblance goes. My 5 year old only needs that much apparently.

I do worry that she is going to have her little heart broken if there is some kind of falling out between her friends in the Youth group and some of the girls stop coming. I know this is a real possibility. Just last weekend one of the newer girls became pariah because of a big teen meltdown and so she isn’t going to be coming any more. Fortunately for my daughter she didn’t get close to this girl but I do worry for her.

I don’t want to hold her back. I think it is really cool that she gets to see some of these things before she goes through them. We talk on the way to and from church about this and she is really starting to get it. BTW Helen, you can’t have this one. She is really starting to get cool and interesting. I’ll send you the other girl but you’ll be sending her back. The look is only getting stronger. Soon we’ll have to register her as a lethal weapon.

Anyways, I’m getting distracted so I’ll leave it as that.

I’m afraid for my kids if it is. This week my kids decided to behave like stereotypical pastor’s kids. Well, not the baby but what can he do?

Wednesday my daughter got 3 demerits at school (4 equals detention) and one of those was from hitting her best friend. What on earth?

Then my son finished destroying his nap mat. OK, I admit I hate the way they handle the whole nap situation. The boy doesn’t take a nap unless he is ill. My oldest is the same but her teacher will make her lay quietly for 15 minutes then let her get a toy that doesn’t make noise or a book to keep herself entertained. His teacher makes him lay on his mat and not move for 2 hours. Can you imagine lying still for 2 hours wide awake? Now imagine being a 4 year old. Yeah pretty bad, but still I hate that he destroys stuff. OK sure I destroyed plenty but that is different. I was bored and bad things happen when I’m bored. (Like I said I’m concerned ADHD is genetic).

Anyways, my daughter just started the daycare and wouldn’t you know it, she got in trouble on Wednesday too. She normally takes a nap. If she doesn’t she gets very cranky. For some reason she doesn’t take her nap at day care. I think the change in setting is the issue. She has been pretty good except for Wednesday. She decided to moon the class. She pulled her pants and panties down and had her legs up over her head wagging her bare butt in the air. Maybe streaking is genetic too?

I’m hoping it is just spring fever and that they will settle back down to their normal well behaved selves soon. Anyone else having crazy kid issues? What about when you kids were younger?

Did you know the human stomach can hold about a quart of food? Have you ever spilled a quart of oil? I have. It is amazing how much is actually in that little bottle of oil. It can spread across several feet of garage floor.

I can also say that you would be amazed at how much is in a child’s stomach. I woke up this morning, took my shower, got dressed, and went to get my kids ready. This is a pretty standard morning for me. Unfortunately my son came out holding his pants funny. I thought he peed his bed. This is pretty rare for him at 4. The last time was probably 6 months ago. I was informed that he did not pee but had thrown-up. Yep it was all over his bed and on the rug beside his bed. Very nasty.

The good news is I had to get my oldest daughter ready and take her to school so my wonderful wife took over the puke detail. I think it is fair since I had to clean up an unbelievable amount of puke from the car that she provided while pregnant with the boy that puked this morning. I still can’t eat at El Chico’s because the smell. That was lunch just before the car incident. *shudder*

Anyways, happy St. Patrick’s day to everyone. This is my last post in this series for today.

An update on how awesome my daughter is. She has recently started using the computer. We got a Charlie Church Mouse Kindergarten program form my mother-in-law and decided to let her start playing it earlier this week. She watched me start it one time and now we have to watch her because she will hop on the computer and start the game whenever she feels like it.

Now she is browsing the internet. I mean as I type she in cruising around Disney online. I put her on the page then went to get something before trying to find something she could do and a minute later (maybe less) I walked back in and she was in Pixie Hollow. I had to setup her account because she can’t spell (she is only 5 after all) but then she started making her own fairy all by herself.

Yep, she is my mini geek. Now I just need to go find her a mini geek tee-shirt.

Found it

If you don’t know I have 4 kids from 8 months old to 5 years old. Life tends to be hectic but fun. They are so funny but the oldest is really the most interesting right now. She is just starting to get jokes. She would laugh at stuff before but never really jokes unless others laughed and she was just laughing along.

I don’t know if you’ve had kids yet but they go through several stages of humor and understanding jokes is one of the later stages. My mother-in-law still doesn’t quite get it. It is so funny watching her think through a joke and laugh about it when she understands the play on words, but it is even funnier watching her try to make her own humor.

She is starting to tell knock knock jokes, but doesn’t fully understand what makes things funny. Here is one she told me the other day:

Knock Knock
Who’s there?
Me.
Me who?
Just me silly.

Followed by much laughter from her. She also tries playing jokes. Her teacher was sharing with me today about some of her jokes during class. She kept asking questions during the test and the teacher couldn’t answer them. In the past she has really struggled with her phonics tests in large part due to a speech problem she has and so asked these kinds of questions. Her teacher has always had to tell her she can’t answer them for her on the test and will say “what do you think it is?” Her teacher has expressed to me in the past how bad she feels to see her struggling with the test and unable to tell her the answers to the questions she asked. My daughter played on these emotions asking her time and time again during this test only to respond with “gotcha” and marking the right answers. She totally aced the test and also got a major sarcasm bonus.

She is really catching up in phonics and reading, doing great in numbers and math, and performing at a 5th grade level in sarcasm. I can’t tell you how proud I am of my daughter.
