Life is Funny when you have kids

I don’t often participate in the “life is funny” carnival, (read I have never but really should), but I have to share this little story and while it was happening I kept thinking of the “life is funny” carnival. Most kids like to play house or school. Admittedly my kids often play this game. They [...]

Playing hooky with my kids

This past weekend I was blessed to be able to spend time with my wife without the kids. They stayed most of the weekend with some friends and the last several hours before we got home with my parents. We had a great time with the retreat but missed our kids. Today we decided to [...]

My oldest is a sweet little girl who turns 7 this summer. She is pretty certain that 7=teenager. I feel this is a safe assertion based on a few unavoidable facts. She wants to hang out with the teens She tries to act like the teens She claims she is going to be a teenager [...]

Percy Jackson and the Plot Thief

Percy Jackson and the Plot Thief

I watched Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightening Thief last night. If you are thinking about watching it, then I’ll do my best to avoid spoilers. It is a good movie but the basic plot is a rehash of The Clash of the Titans which is more or less the story of Perseus and some feats he accomplishes as told by various ancient Greek sources. Of course that is kind of the whole point so I guess it isn’t right so poke fun at the fact that this plot is totally hijacked. The obstacles that Percy must overcome, though, are not limited to those that Perseus faces. They mix in various encounters form Herculean and Odyssean myth. This makes the rehashed story feel more fresh and new.

I don’t know what kind of follow-up happened when I called. Maybe they looked into the situation and found proof that nothing had happened. Maybe the information went in a file where it sits waiting for another report. I do know it is frustrating, no it is disheartening.

I love discipline (not what you think)

I love discipline (not what you think)

Children can break your heart, and sometimes the worst part is educating them. I strongly believe in discipline over punishment. We do use punishments as part of discipline, but not in place of it. I might spank one of my kids or give them a time out, but before I talk to them. I try to make sure they understand why the punishment is happening. I also talk afterward so they will remember.

SNOW!!!!

SNOW!!!!

I use to love snow when I was young. We didn’t get many great snow storms in the places I grew up. Oklahoma City got the occasional 1-4 inches but that was all we needed to have fun all day long. I would stay out in it until my clothes were sopping wet and my appendages were hurting. I would have probably played until a finger fell off or something but my parents dragged me in kicking and screaming. The waiting hot chocolate put a quick end to the fit but still, I was ready to go the second the beverage was gone.

Did I mention I have a tooth phobia?

Posted by Nick the Geek in All, Dad on 14. Dec, 2009 | 12 Comments

I love my kids and I love my parents, but somewhere people don’t understand a fear I have deep down inside of me. I think it has to do with my mother pulling my teeth when I was young. She tried all the made for sitcom methods of tooth extraction. I really did have my tooth tied to a door knob and other ingenious devices. None of those things worked. The last time I went to her about a loose tooth she came at me with a pair of pliers. Now you have to understand this. When I got my first loose tooth my mother was a dental assistant. You would think that she would have a leg up on other mothers out there. I’m thinking her end goal was to have me deal with my own loose teeth. When she came at me with the pliars I ran the other way and only told her about my teeth after the fact.

At some point during all of this I watched the movie The Fly and in that movie there is a scene where Jeff Goldblum’s teeth start falling out. Enter my biggest phobia. I have plenty of dreams that others might find scary but I enjoy them. They are violent and down right freaky, but they don’t bother me. Then I’ll have dreams where my teeth fall out and I wake up terrified.

Enter Saturday night. (Click Through to find out what happened and how emotionally scared I really am)

I should be putting up one of my fiction posts but I really want to get through the vacation, talk about King’s Fest, and get back on my regular schedual. The last time I walked about my vacation I was in Northern CA and my wife was in Southern CA. Of course it wouldn’t be [...]

Why vampires don’t sparkle

Like I said the past couple of days there are a lot of really great things about this vacation. I had to pull the bad out so the good would look even better by comparison. Today I’m going to talk about the plane trip, the boardwalk, and the redwoods. The flight out was interesting to [...]
